Hi, I’m Kendall

I hold a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Denver, where I completed coursework such as The Science of Reading and became endorsed in this evidence-based approach.

I am currently taking an intensive course to become certified in the Orton-Gillingham method, the gold standard in structured literacy instruction for young readers!

Over the past few years, I’ve worked in Denver Public Schools as an educator intern, Kindergarten teacher, and now a substitute teacher. Through these experiences, I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be to give every child the targeted support they need within a busy classroom setting. That’s why I’m passionate about 1:1 tutoring—where I can meet each child exactly where they are, provide individualized instruction, and watch their confidence soar!

Whether your child is just starting to learn the fundamentals of reading or needs extra support to close skill gaps, I’m here to help them succeed in a fun, engaging, and encouraging way.

I specialize in reading intervention for Kindergarten-2nd grade.

Why the Orton-Gillingham Approach?

The Orton-Gillingham approach is considered the gold standard for teaching reading, writing, and spelling—especially for students with dyslexia or other reading difficulties, but it benefits all learners. It’s a highly structured, multi-sensory, and evidence-based method that teaches the building blocks of language in a clear, systematic way. Students don’t just memorize words—they truly understand how language works, which leads to lasting reading confidence and skills that transfer across subjects.

What makes this method so unique is it’s personalized and sequential nature. Lessons are tailored to each student’s needs, and skills are introduced in a carefully designed order, ensuring no gaps in understanding. Every session engages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning pathways, which helps information “stick” in the brain far more effectively than traditional reading instruction.

Being certified in Orton-Gillingham means I’ve completed specialized, intensive training that most private tutors don’t have. It allows me to identify precisely where a student is struggling and create a targeted plan to close those gaps—something that simply isn’t possible in the time constraints of a typical classroom. For families, this means your child isn’t just getting tutoring—they’re getting a research-backed, individualized intervention proven to help struggling readers thrive.

Availability, Locations & Rates

I am currently available during weekdays after school. Tutoring can take place in the comfort of your home or at the Denver Public Library in Bonnie Brae, depending on your preference.

I recommend each session is 1 hour long. Research shows that early elementary students can sustain focused learning in a 1:1 setting for about 60 minutes before fatigue reduces effectiveness. A full 60 minutes also allows for a complete and engaging instructional cycle.

We had the pleasure of having Kendall as our daughter’s kindergarten teacher, and I cannot recommend her highly enough—especially for early reading support. When the school year began, our daughter was performing below grade level. Thanks to Ms. Kushner’s patient, structured, and nurturing approach, she not only caught up but finished the year on grade level. Our daughter can become frustrated if things don't come easily to her, but she always looked forward to school even when it was challenging. Her progress in reading, writing, and comprehension is a direct result of the time and care Ms. Kushner put into her growth. If you're looking for a tutor who truly understands how to support young readers, I wholeheartedly recommend Ms. Kushner. Her teaching made a lasting difference for our family, and I’m confident she’ll do the same for yours.
